Margot Robbie: From subway cashier to Hollywood star

Before becoming a Hollywood star, Margot Elise Robbie was a true country girl. Few people know that to get to where she is today, the actress had to go through many difficulties.

Margot Elise Robbie was born on July 2, 1990, in Dalby, Queensland, Australia. At that time, she could not have imagined that in the future, she would become one of the most influential people in the film industry. At just 31 years old, she has been nominated for an Oscar twice and her outstanding talent has helped her have many opportunities to work with big stars in the entertainment industry.

However, achieving that is not easy. Margot answered in an interview, “If I want something, I have to make it happen”, and she did. When she was only 5 years old, her father and mother decided to separate, and her fate from then on seemed to have taken a decisive turn.

She is the third child in a family of four siblings, the daughter of Sarie Kessler – a physical therapist and Doug Robbie – a farmer. After Doug left, Sarie had to take care of the children, so their financial situation was not simple. Margot has always been a strong and independent woman, understanding her mother’s difficulties, so she worked many jobs at once: a maid, a waitress and worked at Subway.

In an interview about performing for the Australian television series Neighbors, Margot recalled she achieved this after sending a letter to the show’s producers. “I was there for months, before realizing that no one was around.” At the time, Robbie was working at Subway.

But when you are destined to achieve great things in life, nothing will stop you. Proof of that is Margot’s story. After appearing in a few productions in Australia, she decided to break new ground in Hollywood, something we all know is not easy, especially if you are a young foreigner who doesn’t What is there besides a circus certificate and studies from Somerset College.

Even though all odds seemed to be against her, she finally decided to move to the United States at the age of 20. Just a few months later, the actress landed a leading role in the film Pan Am. “Everyone said: ‘You’re crazy to come to America! You’ll never make it!’ But I did it,” she said.

“Growing up, I always saw people receiving gifts from Tiffany & Co. in little blue boxes. And I always wondered, ‘Would someone give me a little blue box?’ So when I first came to New York, after entering the industry, I took my first paycheck, went straight to Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue, and bought a little bracelet to wear. It was the cheapest thing in the store, but it came in a little blue box.”

But the big breakthrough in her career only came after the actress was cast as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street. This role brought her industry-wide recognition and catapulted her to international fame. Thanks to that, she paid off the mortgage on her mother’s house.

Without a father, her mother became her role model: “Mom has always worked to raise us. She is a physiotherapist. Sometimes I think she is lying, because I don’t understand “How does my mother have so much energy? I still wonder how she can tolerate us – four naughty children who always quarrel with each other all the time.”

Margot says, “My mother is the sweetest person on Earth, and if I were her, I wouldn’t be sad at all; in fact, it would be an honor.”

In 2014, she met Tom Ackerley, whom she later married. Tradition says that the father of the bride should come to his daughter on her wedding day; however, Margot’s mother did it in his place. Her father, on the other hand, was not even invited to the event. The actress said that they barely had contact: “I’m not like him.”

Doug Robbie paid for Margot and her siblings to go to private school, but he wasn’t exactly a conventional father figure. His two daughters, Margot and Anya, said they “didn’t want to know him.” However, his two sons, Cameron and Lachlan, are a bit more sympathetic to their father.

Dreams come true, it’s true, but it takes discipline, courage and dedication. And Margot Elise Robbie is a person who has all those elements. She has proven that she is skilled as a chameleon and can take on different roles. Think of movies like Focus, Suicide Squad, The Legend of Tarzan, I, Tonya, Mary Queen of Scots and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In 2023, audiences will see her on screen as Barbie in this live-action movie about the famous doll.

Overcoming a financially difficult childhood – despite having a wealthy father, two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie went from being a ticket taker on the Tube, to now has become someone with a net worth of $15 million. And indeed, the arts have many more achievements in store for the talented Margot, both as an actress and a producer.
